I finally got up on the roof with a spray bottle and a helper inside the attic. We started from the bottom and worked up, soaking one section at a time. It turned out the flashing around the chimney was cracked and the sealant had peeled away. A quick temporary patch with roofing tar stopped the drip until I can replace the flashing properly.
