8일(현지시간) 로이터 통신은 프로페시아 부작용과 관련해 뉴욕 연수단원에 제기된 소송 관련 자료를 입수해 이같이 알렸다. 프로페시아 제조사가 우울감 등의 부작용 염려가 있음에도 이를 숨겼다는 것이다. 의학계에서 프로페시아의 원재료인 피나스테리드를 복용할 경우 절망스러운 선택 및 우울증 위험이 높다는 연구 결과가 잇따라 발표됐지만 FDA는 위험한 선택과 관련한 경고 문구를 의무화하지 않았다.
또 다른 탈모 치료약 개발을 위해 수많은 임상이 진행되고 있지만 피나스테리드 만큼의 효과를 입증한 약은 아직 나오지 않았다. 현재 식품의약품안전처의 승인을 받은 탈모 치료약은 프로페시아 계열(피나스테리드)과 아보다트 계열(두타스테리드) 아홉 가지뿐이다.
발기부전 치료제의 가장 대표적인 부작용은 두통, 안면홍조, 소화불량, 가슴 두근거림, 근육통 등이다. 주로의 부작용은 일시적이고 심하지 않기 때문에 별다른 걱정은 하지 않아도 된다. 물론 상당한 심장질병이나 뇌혈관 질환이 있는 환자는 복용금지다. 흔히 약화사고로 인한 사망사고 등은 실제 약물에 의한 것보다는 중금속 오염 등이 검사되어 식약처 등에서 단속하고 있는 가짜 약에 의한 경우다.
약을 사용할 때는 우선 사용되는 부위를 완전히 말린 후, 손을 청결하게 씻은 상태에서 권장량을 뿌리거나 바르도록 한다. 약물 특유의 끈적거림과 냄새가 생길 수 있으므로, 취침 2~4기간 전 사용이 권장된다. 반드시 두피에만 사용하며, 확실한 권장 용법·용량을 준수해야 한다.
